Model of optimal behaviour in fish larvae predicts that food availability determines survival, but not growth

چکیده

How do growth and survival of larval fish depend on the availability of zooplankton prey? This question connects plankton ecology to fisheries science and is typically answered by the classical ‘match/mismatch’ hypothesis for explaining recruitment variability to fish populations. In field and experimental data, however, the effects of food abundance on growth are not always unequivocal. Here, we present a detailed state-dependent optimality model of larval cod Gadus morhua in a water column with environmental gradients and circadian light cycles. Larval feeding rates and predation risk both depend on ambient light, body size, swimming activity and depth position, which together describe trade-offs between growth and survival from realistic mechanisms. The model finds the optimal depth (vertical migration) and swimming activity that maximize survival probability to a given size (15 mm). These optimal behaviours in turn determine food intake, gut fullness, growth and survival over time. The model predicts that increasing food leads to increasing survival, whereas growth remains high except when food availability is very low. When food is more abundant, larvae select deeper and safer habitats and are less active to avoid predation. This can explain why prey abundance and larval fish growth are often not strongly correlated in field studies, although there is still an important effect of prey abundance on recruitment success through its effect on predation rates.

Effects of different starter diets on growth indices of Caspian Kutum, Rutilus frisii kutum larvae

Six different diets including two rainbow trout starters, Gammarus dry powder, shrimp dry powder, egg yolk dry powder and newly hatched Artemia were used in feeding of Caspian Kutum larvae. During a 4-week trial, larvae with a mean weight of 17.5 ± 4.7 mg were fed with three replicates and growth parameters were measured at the end of the experiment. Thirty fish in each experimental unit with...

Food for Thought Can behavioural ecology unite hypotheses for fish recruitment?

Since the classical works by Hjort linked the survival of early life stages of fish to year-class strength and recruitment, fisheries science has struggled to understand the fate of fish eggs and larvae. Here we discuss how food availability will influence growth and survival of larvae when foraging behaviour is flexible and involves predation risk. We use theory to show that small larval fish ...

Effect of different levels of n-3 HUFA on larvae culture performances of Beluga (Huso huso) fish

The effects of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) were studied on Beluga (Huso huso) fish larvae by feeding fish larvae with live food  enriched with 4 different oils (ICES 30/4, tuna eye oil, flaxseed oil and linseed oil) containing different levels of n-3 HUFA including 27.19, 20.33, 12.71 and 0.39 mg g-1 dry weight of oil, respectively. Fish larvae weighing 30.00±2.00 mg were rand...
